Shadows of Ashenfall: What Jagex's Own Posts Show
Jagex announced Shadows of Ashenfall in 2025 as a bigger, more social Dragonwilds. It is missing from Dragonwilds' RuneFest 2026 plans, which fits the report that it became RS4.
What Jagex said
In a Dragonwilds roadmap post in June 2025, Jagex described work that went beyond the game's story updates and gave it the codename "Shadows of Ashenfall":
"We are exploring ways to expand the core Dragonwilds survival experience with higher player counts, larger worlds, exciting new ways to engage with dragons, and a focus on social interaction, trade, and sandbox fun."
At RuneFest 2026, Jagex set out Dragonwilds' plans for the next two years: the Luminance update in December 2026, the two-chapter Blood Crystal Saga from 2027, and the Plundered Gods Saga from 2028. Neither Jagex's RuneFest press release nor its Dragonwilds RuneFest post mentions Shadows of Ashenfall. The same press release introduces RS4 as "the as-yet-unnamed title", a new MMO "built for a new generation of players".
What it means
Our reading: Jagex's own posts line up with what Dragonwilds executive producer Jesse America told PCGamesN, that RS4 grew out of Shadows of Ashenfall. More players, bigger worlds, trading and social play is close to a description of an MMO, and the expansion has now dropped out of Dragonwilds' plans while a new MMO set in Ashenfall has appeared.
Jagex has not said in an official post that Shadows of Ashenfall became RS4, so we report the link as stated in an interview, not as confirmed.
Still unknown
Whether any part of Shadows of Ashenfall still comes to Dragonwilds, and which of its ideas carry over into RS4.
