RS4 Started as a Dragonwilds Expansion, Jagex Says

Dragonwilds' executive producer says RS4 began as Shadows of Ashenfall, a 2027 Dragonwilds expansion with MMO features, before Jagex made it a game of its own.

What was reported

Before the RS4 reveal at RuneFest 2026, Dragonwilds executive producer Jesse America explained in a roundtable interview with PCGamesN how the project began:

"On the Dragonwilds roadmap at a certain point, there was something called Shadows of Ashenfall in 2027."

That expansion was designed to take Dragonwilds "into the realm of the typical Jagex game with persistent servers, high player counts, and lots of social features", including a social hub and player-to-player trading. Early prototypes changed the plan. In America's words, the team realised that what it was building "essentially would be an MMO, and that it deserved its own game - not to be a part of Dragonwilds, but to stand alone as Jagex's fourth, new pillar."

What it means

Our reading: this explains why RS4 begins in Ashenfall, and why Jagex says it builds on what it learned making Dragonwilds. It does not give RS4 a release year. 2027 was the target for the planned expansion; a full MMO is a much larger project, and Jagex's own RS4 page says the game "is still a few years away".

The story comes from a press interview, not from Jagex's RS4 page, so we report it as what a Jagex producer said rather than as an announced fact.

Still unknown

Whether Shadows of Ashenfall is still planned for Dragonwilds in any form, and which parts of its design carried over into RS4.

How is RS4 related to RuneScape: Dragonwilds?

RS4 is a separate game that begins in Ashenfall, the region first explored in Dragonwilds, years after Dragonwilds' events. Jagex says it builds on the technology lessons it learned making Dragonwilds.
