Why Jagex Revealed RS4 Years Before Launch
RS4 is still a few years away, yet Jagex showed it at RuneFest 2026. Its stated reason is to build the game with players from the start.
What Jagex said
Jagex addressed the timing directly on its RS4 page:
"We thought long and hard about revealing this project so early. We could have kept it behind closed doors for much longer, especially given that we are still right at the beginning of a hugely ambitious project and the game is still a few years away."
"…that means bringing you into the development journey earlier than you might expect - sharing ideas, testing things, listening and learning as we go."
It describes the approach as building "with you, not just for you", and lists community-driven development next to integrity and permanent progression as RS4 principles.
What it means
Our reading: an early reveal means RS4 news will arrive as a development diary rather than a finished-game campaign. Expect ideas and tests before polished trailers, and details that may change between updates. Anything Jagex shares as an idea is not a confirmed feature until it says so.
"Testing things" is a stated intention, not an announced beta. No sign-up for a test exists yet; the form on the official page registers interest for news.
Still unknown
How players will be involved, when the first tests happen and who can join. Jagex says it will explain how to get involved in 2027.
