RS4 and the Four Generations of RuneScape
Jagex calls RS4 its fourth-generation RuneScape project. Here is the history behind the name, from the 2001 original to RuneScape 3 and Old School.
What Jagex said
"Right now, it's rocking a working title: RS4. That isn't necessarily the name we'll eventually settle on, but this is our fourth generation RuneScape project, so RS4 works pretty well for now."
The earlier generations
- 2001: RuneScape launches as a browser game set in Gielinor. That original version later became known as RuneScape Classic.
- 2004: RuneScape 2 is released.
- 2013: Old School RuneScape launches in February, based on an August 2007 backup of the game. RuneScape 3 follows in July, which is why players still call today's main game "RS3".
- 2025: RuneScape: Dragonwilds, a co-op survival game, enters early access and introduces Ashenfall.
- 2026: Jagex reveals RS4 at RuneFest.
What it means
Jagex does not list which projects it counts as the first three generations. Our reading: the name follows the Classic, RuneScape 2 and RuneScape 3 line, while Old School and Dragonwilds sit beside that line as separate games. Unlike those earlier jumps, RS4 does not replace the game before it: Jagex says RuneScape, Old School and Dragonwilds keep their own teams and roadmaps.
Still unknown
The final name. Jagex says RS4 is a working title, and any rename will be recorded on our RS4 name page.
